Background
----------

The main static element of the british forces was deployed along the so-called "Gazala Line", which consisted of an inter-connected system of defence "boxes" while the armour kept as a mobile reserve behind the line. As the southern flank of the "Gazala line" at Bir Hacheim extended into the empty desert, Rommel opened this offensive on May 26, 1942 with a diversion in the north by the italian infantry, followed by a wide flanking manoeuvre with his panzers in the south to outflank the British position. Still clinched in the "Cauldron" between minefields in the west and British armour in the east, Rommel finally managed to secure his supply-lines after heavy fighting on June 1, 1942.
On June 11 Bir Hacheim fell to the Germans and then Rommel round and struck Tobruk which fell on June 21 to violent Axis attacks.
